The Gorges du Verdon from the rim: a turquoise-green river winds around a huge grey and ochre limestone cliff, with green scrub-covered canyon walls on both sides and the river opening into a wide lake under a hazy summer sky

Gorges du Verdon: Europe's Grand Canyon in Provence

They call it Europe’s Grand Canyon, and it’s in Provence. The Gorges du Verdon run for about 25 km, with limestone walls that drop up to 700 m to the river. That turquoise-green water is part of how the Verdon got its name. If you drive the rim road, stop at every pull-off: each lookout frames the river differently.
